FAQs

  • The McGill Robotics team meets every Saturday in the McConnell Engineering Building. The amount of time you commit to the team is flexible and depends on your availability. Each week, tasks are assigned to members, which generally shouldn't take more than a few hours to complete. However, if you're eager to spend more time contributing to the team, additional work can be assigned to match your interest and dedication. We encourage all members to find a balance that works for them while still meeting their commitments to the team.

  • The McGill Robotics team is organized into three main projects, each further subdivided into mechanical, electrical, and software subteams. Regardless of your degree or background, you're welcome to work on any project and subteam that interests you. The size of each subteam varies depending on the project's needs, typically ranging from 2 to 10 members. Collaboration across subteams is crucial, as each one needs to work closely together to ensure the seamless integration of their work into the full project. This interdisciplinary approach helps bring our projects to life with a cohesive and well-rounded design.

  • No prior experience is required to join McGill Robotics! We welcome students from all backgrounds and levels of expertise. Whether you're a beginner eager to learn or an experienced engineer looking to apply your skills, there's a place for you on our team. However, there is an interview process to ensure that applicants are a good fit for the team and our projects. While not all applicants are accepted, we encourage everyone to apply and showcase their passion and motivation. Once you're on the team, you'll have plenty of opportunities to grow through mentorship and collaborative learning.

  • Joining McGill Robotics is easy! We participate in various events around campus throughout the year, including both recruitment and informational events where you can meet current members and learn about our projects. If we're currently looking for new members, the application form will be posted on our website and Instagram. For more information on these events and how to apply, be sure to follow us on Instagram @mcgillrobotics. We’re always looking for passionate and motivated students to join our team.

  • Yes, McGill Robotics offers numerous leadership opportunities. As you gain experience and demonstrate commitment, you may take on roles such as subteam lead, project manager, or even an executive position within the team. However, there is no requirement for members to take on leadership positions if they do not wish to do so. You can contribute to the team in a way that aligns with your interests and comfort level. Leadership roles, for those interested, provide valuable experience in project management, team coordination, and decision-making, which are highly beneficial for your professional development.

  • Competitions are a key part of the McGill Robotics experience. We typically participate in international competitions, most of which are held in North America, where our projects are put to the test against other teams. Travel is often involved, but is not mandatory for all members. If you’re interested in competing, there’s usually an application process to select the competition team, but everyone’s contributions are vital in getting us to competition.
